During my High School days at Msengezi Secondary School, I was leader of the Pecation Band. A Pecation Band is a group of students who engage in conducting traditional dance shows and cheer-leaders activities for the school during important festivals or to commemorate the country's revolutionary days. These students practice traditional dance, cultural activities and drama and wear traditional attire such as "nhembe" to bring awareness to the young about our roots.
It is this responsibility that led me to play "jorosarema" - a kind of get together dance festival that is played using drums and "hosho" as well as "manja"-clapping sticks. Jorosarema is a famous traditional dance that is practiced mostly by people from my rural home -the north eastern side of Zimbabwe that covers the district of Murewa. Usually old men and women wear some special dress comprising laced skirts, no top and a head covering made from animal fur or bird feathers. During the rituals of traditional bear drinking, they resort to this characteristic drum beat which uniquely define the Murewa Jorosarema bit. This is unique throughout Africa. Because I lived and witnessed Jorosarema live , I have even seen people getting possessed during this bear drinking and dance. As students, I taught my fellow students how to play Jorosarema and this way we became famous. Part of my project which got stalled due to resources availability and time constraints, was to replay Jorosarema using modern instruments that combine an assortment of juitars, keyboards and drums. I believe that if granted an opportunity I would revive this almost extinct entertainment tradition and revamp it with modern tunes, while preserving its traditionality.https://flavourpmusic.webnode.com
